I was just a kid when I started my property career. I strolled into a real estate office in suburban Campsie and demanded to speak with the owner. We chatted and he explained that at 20 years of age, I was too young be employed. After much persuasion he agreed on a trial…thankfully my career was on its way.
That office was ‘Robert R Andrew’. Robert, or Mr. Andrew as we called him, was a real estate icon. He was ahead of his time, an innovator. His skill was to encourage and mentor. I was a reasonably quick learner and had my first agency in Beverly Hills in partnership with Robert aged 25. Looking back on it it’s hard to imagine a person of 25 running a medium sized real estate practice.
After five years a bigger challenge beckoned…the inner west. I realised the turnover of property was much greater around the city fringe. It was in early nineties that I opened the boutique branded agency ‘Shields’, in Newtown. Quickly we attracted buyers, sellers and property developers who also saw the potential in the emerging suburbs of Newtown, Camperdown, Glebe etc. Relationships were established, sites purchased and sales made at a rapid rate. The project marketing arm of the business boomed.
After 15 years at ‘Shields’ I decided to take a break and consider new challenges. Senior roles at high profile agencies CBRE, Colliers and McGrath once again opened my eyes to the opportunities available in the city fringe property market. With extra experience and insight under my belt I opened Ray White at Erskineville with partners to launch our Inner City Project Division. Sarah Tanner, fresh from an illustrious career with McGrath, joined me in the role of Media Manager and Head of Sales. Sarah adds depth to the talent pool of the agency and is a gifted marketer and stylist.
Our first twelve months of operation has seen us sell prime residential projects including ‘One Victoria’ Ashfield, ‘Omega’ Glebe, ‘The Winery’ Redfern, ‘Verde’ Rosebery and ‘Honeycomb Terraces’ Erskineville. The combined value of the 180 individual apartment sales is circa $175M…a satisfying result!
My attitude towards business has always been to look for enthusiasm and talent in the people I employ. My experienced has taught me that talent is wonderful but focus and determination are qualities that are undervalued. I enjoy working with young people on the way up if they are genuinely prepared for the sacrifices and disappointments that are associated with success.
